In 1968, Yasunari Kawabata delivered his renowned lecture “Japan, the Beautiful, and Myself” upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, articulating a unique vision of Japan's aesthetics. Twenty-six years later, Kenzaburo Oe, the second Japanese Nobel laureate in Literature, continued this exploration under the title “Japan, the Ambiguous, and Myself.” These lectures, contrasting yet complementary, have captured the essence of Japanese aesthetics and art, and have been long regarded as cornerstones in the discourse of Japanese culture.

This exhibition serves as a contemporary dialogue with their words, extending their insights into the present state of Japanese art. Reflecting the evolving art forms from antiques, modern and contemporary art to those of digital mediums, this exhibition presents a journey through the intricate “layers of time” and reveals the radical approaches to art that illuminate our existence.
