Job Description

Flatiron Japan is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Engineer to join our small startup team in Tokyo. We are in need of a technologist who is passionate about healthcare and the potential for real-world evidence to accelerate cancer research and accomplish our mission to improve and extend lives by learning from the experience of every person with cancer. Are you ready to be the next changemaker in cancer care?

Flatiron Health is a healthtech company using data for good to power smarter care for every person with cancer, around the world. Flatiron partners with cancer centers in the US, Europe and Asia to transform patients’ real-life experiences into real-world evidence and create a more modern, connected oncology ecosystem. Our multidisciplinary teams include oncologists, data scientists, software engineers, epidemiologists, product experts and more. Flatiron Health is an independent affiliate of the Roche Group.

Responsibilities

Learning from the experience of every cancer patient involves exploring many available data sources, and building robust data pipelines and systems that scale, while maintaining a laser focus on data protection and security. We welcome generalist engineers, aspiring architects, passionate backend engineers, engineers that are enthusiastic about data, and emerging engineering leaders. As an engineer you will:

  • Devise creative solutions to solve tough business, security, and data privacy challenges
  • Build and maintain web applications that are flexible, scalable, and meet the needs of a rapidly changing business
  • Deploy solutions at hospital partner premises
  • Rapidly iterate on products early in the development of product-market fit
  • Represent Flatiron externally to hospital partners’ technical staff
  • Promote technical best practices with teammates
  • Bring or develop a deep knowledge of healthcare technology in Japan, including data sources, sector-wide requirements, and emerging trends
  • Work day-to-day with oncologists, product leaders, quantitative scientists and customers to understand their challenges and how technology can help solve them
  • Collaborate with Engineers across all of our global locations

Qualifications

You're a software engineer with 4+ years of experience developing robust and scalable solutions. You're passionate about solving real-world problems with proven technologies and building elegant, scalable systems. You write simple, sophisticated, well-structured and well tested code that drives new features and improvements.

  • You have worked in a collaborative agile development environment using programming languages like Python, C#, and Java, but are also a quick learner. Bonus points if you are an experienced C# specialist or have an affinity for server hardware, Linux system administration, and/or networking
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity - you’re able to quickly develop hypotheses with limited information and have a demonstrated ability to learn complex concepts quickly
  • You are fluent (or professional-level) in both Japanese and English, and are comfortable representing the team externally to hospital partners/vendor companies in Japanese
  • You are excited to work in a small-team environment and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. You have an entrepreneurial spirit, “get it done” mentality, a nose for value and empathy for your customer
  • You are an effective communicator who is equally comfortable telling a compelling story to stakeholders, clinicians, engineers and customers.
  • You care more about our patients, customers, and advancing cancer treatment than you do about working with the coolest/newest technology

You're excited by the prospect of rolling up your sleeves and using technology to tackle meaningful problems each and every day. You're a kind, passionate and collaborative problem-solver who seeks and gives honest feedback and values the opportunity to improve the lives of cancer patients.

If this sounds like you, you'll fit right in at Flatiron.
