Job Description

Monotype is looking for a Creative Type Director in Tokyo, to help us drive our strategy within this growing and high potential market. The Creative Type Director will have a wide range of responsibilities, but will be instrumental in supporting and collaborating with our Japan sales team on growing revenue, building relationships and acting as a trusted typographic advisor on behalf of the Company.

Total Base Pay Range: 8,219,627 - 12,329,441

Responsibilities

  • Promote our expertise and typography at large as well as maintain and build our reputation for excellence in type.
  • Support and collaborate with sales and account managers at customer meetings as well as marketing specialists of such regions as an expert type design & typographic consultant.
  • Collaborating with Japan sales leadership up to and including VP and SVP level.
  • Deliver presentations to customers, agencies or other industry events. Participate in podcasts, webinars and other marketing owned activities as required.
  • Represent the company as the senior type design expert within Japan and elsewhere as required
  • Take an active role in building relationships and acting as a trusted advisor with our customers, within the type design community, agencies, freelancers and universities.
  • Coordinate and lead the creative component for custom projects. Lead and collaborate with internal and external type designers or other contributors working on projects for which you are the Creative Type Director.
  • Collaborate with our other Creative Type Directors, sales and marketing specialists around the globe on the development of the Monotype Library.
  • Recognize and analyze local market trends in type design and make recommendations for strategic initiatives to satisfy customer needs and increase business.
  • Ongoing collaboration with the entire Monotype Studio team.
  • Continuous development of knowledge about current font technologies, Non-Latin scripts, and typographic practices.

Qualifications

  • Ideally you will hold a Masters Degree in Visual Communication/Type Design or a similar creative field.
  • Extensive experience in a senior type design or Creative Director role.
  • Understanding of the Type market and customers needs in Japan
  • Established network of peers in the creative community up to C-suite level (desired).
  • Fluent in Japanese & English
  • A type design portfolio showing high-quality design skills and the necessary technical know-how.
  • Very good technical skills using an industry standard font editing tool (i.e. Glyphs, RoboFont, FontLab Studio, Adobe FDK).
  • Well-structured work methodology and capability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Editorial capabilities to write short articles or blog entries on typography.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to travel.
